Application of rotational molding materials in the field of hydrogen gas cylinders

In 2021, the country put forward major strategic decisions of "carbon neutrality" and "carbon peak". Hydrogen, as a clean energy source with zero pollution, has been pushed into a rapid development channel and its application in daily production and life is becoming increasingly widespread. However, the problem of lightweighting of domestic hydrogen storage tanks urgently needs to be solved!



At present, the development of hydrogen storage tanks has gone through Type I bottles, Type II bottles, Type III bottles, and Type IV bottles, and is increasingly moving towards lightweight. The lining of Type III bottles is made of metal material, which is relatively heavy and not suitable for lightweight applications. The lining of Type IV bottles is made of polymer material, which is lightweight and produced using rotational molding technology. The exterior is wrapped with carbon fiber, greatly reducing the weight of hydrogen storage tanks. It can be widely used in lightweight mobile equipment such as commercial vehicles and household cars. However, China is still using Type III bottles, and their application fields are still limited to large vehicles such as heavy-duty trucks. Currently, the national standard for Type IV bottles is being formulated intensively.




At present, IV type bottles are mainly used under pressures of 35MPA and 70MPA. The inner liner of the 35MPA hydrogen storage tank is made of internationally recognized high-density material (HDPE), while the 70MPA uses nylon material (PA). Among nylon materials, nylon 6 (PA6) is currently the most economical. But currently, domestic enterprises producing IV type hydrogen storage tanks are facing problems such as expensive imported rotational molding materials and unstable supply, which seriously affect their normal production. Therefore, for high-density hydrogen storage tank materials, our company has developed HD247P, a specialized material for high-density hydrogen storage tanks.
